3. Enjoying Asakusa: Classic Tourist Spots to Visit with Kids

Asakusa is a charming town where traditional Japanese culture comes alive. From historic temples and shrines to modern tourist spots, there are many places to enjoy with children. Below are the must-visit classic spots in Asakusa.

3.1 Senso-ji Temple and Nakamise Street

Senso-ji Temple, the symbol of Asakusa, is known as Tokyo’s oldest temple. Walking through Kaminarimon Gate and along Nakamise Street feels like stepping back in time. For children, the lively atmosphere and unfamiliar scenery will be a fresh experience.

〇 How to Enjoy with Kids and Points to Note

Nakamise Street is lined with souvenir shops and food stalls. It’s a great memory to find favorite souvenirs or enjoy colorful street foods with children. However, Nakamise is very crowded, so hold your children’s hands and be careful not to lose them. Stroller use can be difficult during busy times, so consider using a baby carrier.

3.2 Asakusa Hana Yashiki

Asakusa Hana Yashiki, known as Japan’s oldest amusement park, offers a nostalgic atmosphere and friendly attractions. Many rides are suitable for small children, making it a place where the whole family can smile together. The park also features game corners reminiscent of traditional festivals, sparking children’s curiosity.

3.3 Tokyo Skytree

Tokyo Skytree, towering near Asakusa, attracts children with its impressive height. From the observation deck, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Tokyo, and it’s fun to spot places you visited earlier, like Senso-ji and Sumida River. The nearby Tokyo Solamachi offers character shops and kid-friendly facilities, making it a full-day destination.

3.4 Sumida River Cruise & Water Bus

The Sumida River cruise connecting Asakusa, Tokyo Skytree, and Odaiba is a unique experience where the journey itself becomes an attraction. From the boat, you can see Tokyo’s scenery and historic bridges that are usually not visible from land. Feeling the breeze during the cruise will create unforgettable memories for children.

3.5 Rickshaw Tour of Asakusa

For a deeper experience of Asakusa, consider a rickshaw tour. The rickshaw puller (shafu) will guide you in an enjoyable way about Asakusa’s history and culture, and children will be eager to listen. This different perspective on the town is also great for photos and makes a memorable family experience.

Yuta Kawamura is the third generation of his family at Miyakodori, a geisha house in Asakusa, Tokyo that has hosted ozashiki — private geisha entertainment — since 1950. He writes from inside that world, alongside the okami, Chikage — his mother and Miyakodori's second-generation proprietress. Articles on geisha arts and customs are reviewed by her. Miyakodori works every day with the geisha and taikomochi (hōkan) registered with the Asakusa kenban — the only place in Japan where taikomochi remain formally active — and everything published here is grounded in that first-hand experience.
