Your artists

Geisha in black kimono presenting an open fan before a golden folding screen

Every ozashiki begins with 2 geisha — a dancer and a musician, performing together. You may add more artists to deepen the ensemble.

★ Recommended

Our okami recommends three geisha — a dancer, a musician, and one more to deepen the stage — for a richer, more balanced performance.

Hōkan entertainers performing together on stage before a golden folding screen

Japan’s rarest performing art — available only here.

Hōkan (Taikomochi)

Only here in Japan

A hōkan (also known as a taikomochi) is a professional male entertainer of the highest order — master of storytelling, song, comedy, and traditional games — who performs alongside geisha at formal banquets. Asakusa is the only place in Japan where formally registered hōkan perform; this art exists nowhere else in the country. Adding a hōkan to your evening makes for an experience found nowhere else in the world.

What exactly is a hōkan?

Also called taikomochi — from taiko (drum) and mochi (to carry) — originally referring to those who carried the drum in grand processions. Over centuries the role evolved into a dedicated entertainer who accompanies geisha banquets, lifting the mood with wit, games, and live performance. The hōkan art is officially registered as part of Japan’s living cultural heritage, and Asakusa is its sole remaining home.
