FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Which plan should I choose?
The 2-Hour Geisha Elegance plan is our recommended choice for most guests. It offers the best balance of performances, games, and conversation time. Short on time? The 1-Hour plan gives you the core experience. Want a full dinner? The 3-Hour plan is ideal.
Is this suitable for first-time visitors?
Absolutely. Most of our guests are experiencing geisha culture for the first time. An English interpreter is present throughout, and the geisha are experts at making international guests feel welcome.
What payment methods are accepted?
Cash and credit cards are accepted on-site. A credit card is required at the time of online booking.
What should I wear?
Smart casual is perfectly fine. Please wear socks — bare feet are not appropriate on tatami. Wearing a kimono is also welcome and makes for stunning photos.
Do I need to wear a kimono or any special clothing to visit?
No kimono or special attire is required. Smart casual — the kind of outfit you might wear to a nice dinner — is perfectly appropriate. Some guests enjoy dressing up for the occasion, but there is absolutely no pressure to do so. The focus is on the experience itself: the dance, the games, the conversation, and the warmth of the geisha. If you would like to wear a kimono, rental options are available in the Asakusa area nearby. We simply ask that guests come as they feel most comfortable.
Can I take photos and videos?
Yes. A dedicated photo session is included at the end of every plan. Feel free to capture memories throughout and share on social media.
Is tipping required?
No, tipping is never required. Any gesture of appreciation is entirely optional and will be received with sincere gratitude.
Are chairs available for guests who find floor seating difficult?
Yes. Both the Yanagi Room and the Grand Hall offer table and chair seating. Only the Hana Room uses traditional sunken kotatsu floor seating. Please let us know in advance when booking.
How do I get to Miyakodori?
Miyakodori is in Asakusa, Tokyo — approximately 10–15 minutes from central Tokyo via the Ginza Line or Asakusa Line. We recommend arriving early to explore the streets around Senso-ji.
How far in advance should I book?
We recommend booking as early as possible — ideally two to four weeks ahead, especially for weekend or evening slots. Miyakodori operates on a request reservation system through TableCheck: you submit your preferred date and group size, and we confirm availability, usually within 24 hours. For larger groups or special occasions, we encourage reaching out even earlier so we can arrange everything thoughtfully. Last-minute availability does occasionally open up, but securing your preferred date in advance gives you the best chance of an unhurried, well-prepared evening.
Is Miyakodori reservation-only, or can I walk in on the day?
Private ozashiki plans — our 1-hour, 2-hour, and 3-hour geisha banquet experiences — are strictly by advance reservation. For our Ozashiki Tea House (Matcha with Geisha), online booking is open until 14:00 on the day of the event, and walk-ins may be possible after that if space remains. We do recommend booking the Tea House in advance as well, since sessions fill quickly. If you find yourself in Asakusa without a reservation, feel free to call us directly at +81-3-3874-2175 and we will do our best to help.
Can I book as a solo guest?
Yes — solo guests are warmly welcome across all four of our experiences: the Ozashiki Tea House and all three private plans (1-hour, 2-hour, and 3-hour). Please note that because the geisha team is fixed regardless of group size (a minimum of two geisha for private plans), the per-person rate for solo guests is higher than for larger groups. Many solo travelers find the 1-hour Geisha Highlights or the Ozashiki Tea House a wonderful introduction — our geisha and interpreter will make sure you feel completely at ease throughout.
Can I bring children to the ozashiki?
Children are welcome, and we have hosted guests from infants to grandparents enjoying the ozashiki together. The geisha games — particularly Konpira Fune Fune and Tosenkyo — tend to delight younger guests as much as adults. We ask that families let us know the ages of children when booking so we can prepare seating and the experience flow accordingly. The Ozashiki Tea House is especially well suited for families as an introductory experience. We at Miyakodori believe that the joy of the ozashiki is, in many ways, universal.
Is English available? Will there be an interpreter?
Yes — an English-speaking interpreter accompanies every private plan (1-hour, 2-hour, and 3-hour). Their role is not just to translate words but to bridge the cultural gap so that the ozashiki feels intuitive and immersive from the first moment. For the Ozashiki Tea House, English support is also available. Our okami has been welcoming international guests for years, and while she communicates warmth across any language barrier, having a dedicated interpreter ensures nothing is lost in the experience.
Can you accommodate vegetarian or vegan dietary needs?
Yes. Miyakodori operates as a machiai-chaya — a traditional hosting house rather than a kitchen-based restaurant. This means we source food from trusted local establishments and have considerable flexibility in what we arrange. Vegetarian, vegan, halal, gluten-free, and other dietary requirements can be accommodated with advance notice, ideally at least three days before your visit. Please let us know your needs when booking so we can prepare an option you can enjoy with full peace of mind.
What is your cancellation policy?
For private plans (1-hour, 2-hour, and 3-hour), the following cancellation fees apply: free if cancelled 7 days or more before the reservation; 30% if cancelled 6 days or less before; 50% if cancelled 3 days or less before; 80% if cancelled 2 days or less before; 100% if cancelled 24 hours or less before. For the Ozashiki Tea House, the same policy applies with credit card pre-authorization. We understand that plans can change — if something unexpected comes up, please contact us as early as possible and we will do our best to assist.
How far is Miyakodori from Senso-ji Temple?
We are a short five-minute walk from Senso-ji. Our address is 3-23-10 Asakusa, Taito-ku, Tokyo 111-0032. From the main gate of Senso-ji (Kaminarimon), head north through the Nakamise shopping street, continue into the quieter hanamachi (geisha quarter) streets, and you will find us there. We are located in the heart of Asakusa’s traditional geisha district — so the walk itself is a gentle introduction to the neighborhood. Our phone number is +81-3-3874-2175 if you need guidance on arrival.
Is there parking nearby?
Miyakodori does not have a private parking facility. The surrounding streets in the Asakusa hanamachi area do have paid street parking available, though availability can vary, particularly on busier days. We generally recommend arriving by train or taxi — Asakusa Station (served by the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line, Tobu Skytree Line, and Tsukuba Express) is approximately a 10-minute walk. Taxi drop-off in front of the venue is straightforward. Please feel free to contact us if you need detailed directions.
What is the difference between your plans, and which one do you recommend for a first visit?
We offer four options. The Ozashiki Tea House (75 minutes, ¥17,600 per person during the current campaign) is a shared-seating introduction with three registered Asakusa geisha (two tachikata dancers and one jikata musician) — ideal for those wanting a relaxed first look. For a private experience, the 1-hour Geisha Highlights (from ¥40,000 per person) covers dance, ozashiki games, and a photo session. The 2-hour Geisha Elegance (from ¥53,000 per person) adds time for conversation and is our most popular choice. The 3-hour Twilight Gathering (from ¥110,000 per person) includes a full kaiseki dinner and is the closest to a traditional geisha banquet. For a first private visit, we at Miyakodori most often suggest the 2-hour plan.
How many geisha will join my group?
For the 1-hour Geisha Highlights, two geisha attend for groups of up to six guests; three for groups of seven or more. For the 2-hour Geisha Elegance, two geisha attend for groups of up to five guests; three for groups of six or more. The 3-hour Twilight Gathering includes three geisha for groups of up to five, and four for groups of six or more. The Ozashiki Tea House is hosted by three registered Asakusa geisha (two tachikata dancers and one jikata musician). Additional geisha can be arranged for the 2-hour and 3-hour plans on request. We recommend at least two geisha for the warmest, most immersive evening.
I don’t drink alcohol. Is that a problem?
Not at all. Non-alcoholic options are available at Miyakodori and we are happy to prepare a soft drink in place of the ritual drink requirement. The 1-hour plan requires one drink order per guest — we can arrange a non-alcoholic alternative. The 2-hour and 3-hour plans include free-flow beverages; a selection of non-alcoholic drinks is part of that arrangement. Ozashiki games can be played without alcohol as well — the fun and laughter need no substitute. Please let us know your preference when booking and we will make sure you are comfortable throughout.
Can pregnant guests or elderly visitors participate?
Yes, and we are glad to accommodate. The ozashiki is a seated tatami experience — there is no physical exertion involved. Guests who prefer not to sit directly on the floor can use a chair; please let us know in advance and we will arrange comfortable seating. Pregnant guests have joined us without difficulty. For elderly guests, we can adjust the pace and activity level of the ozashiki games as needed. If you have any specific concerns, please contact us before booking and we will make sure everything is arranged thoughtfully.
How long does each experience actually last?
The plan lengths describe your time with us from the moment you are welcomed to the moment you leave — not the length of a single performance. The Ozashiki Tea House runs for about 75 minutes including the photo session. The 1-hour Geisha Highlights fills roughly a full hour with a short greeting, a traditional dance with live shamisen, ozashiki games, and a closing photo session. The 2-hour Geisha Elegance gives you about two hours together, with the geisha present for nearly the whole visit and added time for conversation through our interpreter. The 3-hour Twilight Gathering spans about three hours, including a full kaiseki dinner, with the geisha alongside you throughout. A little extra time may naturally be added on the evening, so we suggest leaving a comfortable buffer — the evenings tend to leave guests wanting to linger.
What happens from the moment I arrive to when I leave?
When you arrive at Miyakodori, you will be welcomed by our staff and guided to your private tatami room. The geisha enter with a formal greeting, followed by a traditional dance performed to live shamisen music. Next come the ozashiki games — laughter-filled activities played together with the geisha. The 2-hour and 3-hour plans include a conversation period through our interpreter, where guests often ask questions about geisha life. The evening closes with a commemorative photo session and a ritual hand-clapping ceremony called tejime. Our geisha will then bid you farewell at the door — a moment many guests describe as the most memorable of all.
Is Miyakodori accessible for guests using a wheelchair?
We are glad to discuss accessibility needs in advance. Our main ozashiki rooms are traditional tatami spaces, and some areas involve steps. For guests using wheelchairs or with limited mobility, please contact us directly before booking so we can assess the most comfortable arrangement for your visit. We want every guest to have the experience feel easy and welcoming, and we will do our best to accommodate. Phone: +81-3-3874-2175.
Can I use Miyakodori for a birthday, anniversary, or business entertainment?
Absolutely. We have hosted anniversary dinners, birthday celebrations, corporate entertainment, and private gatherings of many kinds. The ozashiki is, by nature, a space designed for meaningful occasions — it has served that purpose since Miyakodori was established in 1950. For special events, please let us know the occasion when booking and we will work with you to shape the evening accordingly. Seasonal decorations, special arrangements, and additional coordination are possible with advance notice. We at Miyakodori are honored to be part of evenings that become lasting memories.
