Spend time with Asakusa geisha and sumo actors in a tatami room reserved entirely for your party, with an English interpreter throughout.

Full Immersion · Three hours · Our most popular plan

¥1,300,000Total for up to 4 guests · Tax included

4 Asakusa geisha, 2 sumo actors and kaiseki (a traditional meal served in courses). Shorter plans are also available.

Please request at least 14 days in advance.

Only at Miyakodori can you experience both geisha and sumo in the same ozashiki.

Miyakodori is a machiai chaya in Asakusa, established in 1950. We arrange the geisha and sumo actors for each private visit, by advance reservation.

Your private visit

At your table,
in your company.

Shown here is the three-hour visit. The two-hour visit follows the same sequence in less time. The one-hour visit includes conversation and ozashiki games with the geisha, and 1 sumo actor, who gives a close-up demonstration of basic movements — no bouts.

  1. Three Asakusa geisha dance with fans before a gold folding screen.

    Dance at your table

An Asakusa geisha performs a classical dance a few steps from your table, accompanied by shamisen played live in the room. Your English interpreter introduces the performance.

  2. Two sumo actors demonstrate a bout beside the table as guests and a geisha applaud.

    Sumo beside you

The sumo actors demonstrate bouts right beside your table. They also show the basic movements, including shiko (stamping) and teppo (arm thrusting), at close quarters.

They have performed in the United States and appeared in films. They are sumo actors, not professional sumo wrestlers.

  3. A guest and a geisha play an ozashiki game with a smiling sumo actor.

    Games, questions and conversation

Join the geisha and sumo actors for traditional ozashiki games. Ask questions through your interpreter, take photographs and, if you wish, try a short bout with a sumo actor.

The private plans

Choose the length
of your visit.

Every plan includes a room reserved for your party and an English interpreter throughout. Visits can be arranged in the afternoon or evening, for up to 14 guests.

Two hours or three?

The performances are much the same on both plans. Three hours adds a fourth geisha and kaiseki, and gives you more time for ozashiki games and for talking with the geisha and the sumo actors.

Planning your visit

Before you request.

Each visit is arranged for your party. Sending a request does not confirm a booking, and nothing is charged at this stage.

How far ahead should we send a request?

Please request at least two weeks in advance so we can arrange the geisha, sumo actors and room. Availability is not guaranteed; one month or more is strongly recommended, especially for the longer plans.

How do we pay?

Nothing is charged when you send your request. Payment is made in advance. Once we confirm your date, we email you a secure link to pay by card; bank transfer is available on request. Payment is due 14 days before your visit, or within 3 days of confirmation if your booking is confirmed less than 14 days before your visit. Other payment methods can be arranged for corporate and travel bookings.

Can children come, and what do they pay?

Yes. The total price covers up to 4 guests, including children of any age. From the fifth guest, children aged 0 to 3 are free, children aged 4 to 12 pay half the additional guest rate, and guests aged 13 and over pay the full rate. Please tell us the children's ages in your request.

Can the length be changed?

Each plan is complete. On the one-hour plan, 1 sumo actor gives a close-up demonstration of basic movements, with no bouts. The sumo actors appear for a fixed time, which cannot be extended. On the three-hour plan, they leave about two hours and fifteen minutes after the start; the remaining time is spent with the geisha. Please tell us about any timing requests in advance, and we will see what is possible.

Can we reserve the whole of Miyakodori?

Yes. Exclusive use of the whole house can be arranged. Please tell us in your request.
