Program Timeline

From arrival to farewell — Here is the full 75 minutes, minute by minute.

15:00

Arrival and Greetings

Welcome to Miyakodori. Remove your shoes at the entrance, step into the tatami room, and meet the geisha face to face for the very first time.

15:15

Seasonal Dance with Live Shamisen

A classical Japanese dance performed live, accompanied by shamisen — not on a stage, but right in front of you. The dance changes with the season. The geisha performing it are working members of the Asakusa hanamachi.

15:25

Q&A with the Geisha

Ask the geisha anything — their training, daily life, the history of their art. An English-speaking staff member is on hand to bridge any language gap.

15:35

Ozashiki Game — Konpira Fune Fune

A reflexes duel set to shamisen rhythm. You and a geisha take turns reaching for the hakama, a small wooden piece set on a kyōsoku armrest — miss the beat and the room bursts into laughter. The song speeds up as it goes, and that is where most people lose.

16:00

Matcha and Japanese Sweets

After the games, once the room has settled, enjoy a bowl of freshly prepared matcha with seasonal Japanese sweets in the ozashiki (geisha banquet) setting.

16:05

Closing Dance and Tejime Finale

The session closes with a final dance and tejime — a traditional rhythmic clapping ceremony that marks the end of a gathering. The geisha lead the clapping and guests join in.

16:15

Geisha Farewell and Close

Photo session with the geisha, then farewell. You leave with the photos, and with whatever the geisha told you when you asked.

The Experience

What’s Included

Live Shamisen and Classical Dance

A practicing geisha performs a classical dance just meters from where you sit, with live shamisen music filling the room. The performance takes place offstage, and the accompaniment is played live rather than recorded.

Q&A with the Geisha

Speak directly with the geisha in a relaxed setting. Ask about their training, their craft, and the world of Asakusa’s hanamachi

Ozashiki Game and Matcha

Play Konpira Fune Fune — a centuries-old reflexes game played in time with the shamisen. Follow the game with a bowl of matcha and seasonal Japanese sweets served in the ozashiki (geisha banquet) tradition.

Photo Session and Tejime Finale

The session closes with a tejime — a traditional clapping ceremony — followed by a photo session with the geisha in full kimono.

This is a living ozashiki experience led by working geisha in Asakusa’s hanamachi. It is not a staged re-enactment.

Things to Know

Practical answers are collapsed to keep the page easy to read. Tap any line to open its answer.

Language & attending alone

Do I need to speak Japanese?

No. English support is available throughout the session. You can participate in the games, ask questions, and enjoy the experience fully without any Japanese language knowledge.

Can I attend alone?

Yes. Solo travelers are very welcome. Because this is a shared-seating event, you will be seated alongside other guests — which often adds to the atmosphere. Many solo visitors find it one of the most memorable things they do in Tokyo.

What to wear

What should I wear?

Casual attire is perfectly fine. Please wear socks — bare feet are not appropriate on tatami.

Can I wear a kimono to the experience?

Yes. Kimono suits the setting at Miyakodori. With tatami floors and working geisha in full dress, the ozashiki is among Asakusa’s most photogenic settings. Guests who wear kimono often find that it adds a great deal to their visit. If you are planning a kimono rental in Asakusa before your visit, we recommend coordinating it with your reservation.

Photos

Yes. The ozashiki room — tatami floors, seasonal flower arrangements, and the geisha in full dress — provides a naturally beautiful backdrop. A dedicated photo session with the geisha is included at the close of every program. Feel free to share your photos on social media.

Drinks

Each guest is asked to order at least one drink during the session (beer, soft drink, etc.). This is charged separately from the experience fee.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Ozashiki Tea House?

The Ozashiki Tea House is a 75-minute shared-seating event where you experience the ozashiki (geisha banquet) culture alongside other guests. It includes a seasonal dance with live shamisen, a Q&A session with the geisha, an ozashiki game, matcha and Japanese sweets, and a photo session.

Is this different from the private ozashiki experience?

Yes. The Ozashiki Tea House is a shared-seating introduction to geisha culture at a lower price than a private ozashiki. The private ozashiki (geisha banquet) reserves a tatami room for your group alone, with geisha present for 1, 2, or 3 hours. Learn more about Private Ozashiki Plans.

What is the campaign price?

The current price of ¥17,600 per person is a Special campaign price. The regular price is ¥22,000 per person.

How do I make a booking?

Book online — a credit card is registered at the time of booking to hold your seats; nothing is charged now. Online booking is available until 2:00 PM on the day of the event. After 2:00 PM, you may call us at +81-3-3874-2175 (available 14:00–21:00) or walk in directly if space permits.

When does the event take place?

The Ozashiki Tea House is held primarily on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 3:00 PM. Check the booking page for current availability as dates may vary by season.

Is this a tourist attraction or the real thing?

The geisha at Miyakodori are working artists who have trained for years in dance, shamisen, and the art of the ozashiki (geisha banquet). It is not a re-enactment. They are registered with the Asakusa kenban and also perform at private ozashiki.

Is the Ozashiki Tea House worth it?

Yes, particularly for a first visit to see geisha. For ¥17,600 per person (special campaign price; regular ¥22,000), the session includes 75 minutes with working geisha in a tatami room. You can watch dance accompanied by live shamisen, play an ozashiki game, and have matcha and seasonal sweets. A Q&A and photo session are also included, with English support throughout. Shared seating keeps the price accessible. This is an ozashiki with practicing geisha, rather than a staged show. Many guests describe it as one of the most memorable things they did in Tokyo.

How much does a geisha experience in Tokyo cost, and what’s included?

The Ozashiki Tea House is ¥17,600 per person (special campaign price; regular ¥22,000). That covers a 75-minute session with working geisha — dance with live shamisen, an ozashiki game, matcha and sweets, a Q&A, and a photo session. One drink order per guest is required and charged separately (¥800–¥5,300). For a fully private room with your group only, our Private Ozashiki Plans start higher — see the private ozashiki page for current pricing.

Is the Tea House or a private ozashiki better value for me?

Both are the real thing — the difference is exclusivity. The Tea House (¥17,600 per person) is shared seating and the most accessible way to experience geisha for the first time. A Private Ozashiki is booked for your group only, in a private tatami room, for 1, 2, or 3 hours — with more time for games, conversation, and optional kaiseki dining. If you want an easy, affordable introduction, the Tea House is excellent value. If you want a private evening built entirely around your party, choose the private ozashiki.
